2021 – January Update

Did I write twenty-eight out of the twenty-eight days of this year? Yes I did! How about you?

Hello everyone, and thank you for reading my first post of the year. It’ll be short, because you and I both have writing to do. That’s right, this year is all about writing and finishing.

What does that mean? That means that when it comes to writing, there is one thing above all that I am focussed on: finishing my stories. Bold statement, Toby, what does that mean? It means that I am focussed on completing three projects this year.

First, is to revise the first manuscript I completed in 2020. It has been reviewed by several readers and a writing coach, and is in good shape. It’s a good story, well told and I am proud of it. Revision should make it better, so stay tuned for updates.

Second, complete the manuscript of the second book I am working on. It is in early stages, but I know what the character arc is, and am now setting up the first act. This is where the bulk of my writing effort will be focussed until March.

Third, I want to write a series of ten flash fiction stories, each counting about five-hundred words. I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried, but I find the exercise incredibly useful to practice my craft. It forces me to get to the point, create a strong hook and develop the action quickly. By training that skill, I’m sure my scenes in larger pieces become stronger.

If you’re reading this and want to write along with me, take a look at my Write Fantasy along with T.G. Ellis series on YouTube. Every day, I livestream and record myself as I write for thirty minutes, so that you can sit and write along with me. Sometimes, it helps to write along with someone.

Thanks a lot for reading, and wherever you are: writer, keep writing!
