3 Tips to start writing Flash Fiction

Writing flash fiction is a lot of fun. Here’s what I’ve learnt about writing flash fiction so far.

Write first, finish the story. Edit later.

Use prompts or what-if questions to help yourself get started. Discover the story by writing it, then edit and improve it. Use timed writing sessions to focus your efforts.

Flash is a demanding as other forms.

You’re telling a full story, but in only five-hundred words. It takes as much creativity to create the character, conflict and resolution for flash as it does for short stories and novels.

Read good flash to learn how good flash works.

Learn to write good flash by reading and imitating stories that you found entertaining, compelling and moving. Discover what those authors did by emulating their style. In doing so, you’ll discover your own.
