Stuck? Write the opposite.

Crafting a compelling character arc is hard work. When I get stuck, I go back to the first line or opening statement of my story and try to discover the value. If it’s laughter, I focus on making my character cry by the end. Forcing myself to write towards an opposite forces me to ask this question: what happened to create this reversal in my character. And in the end, story is all about that change.
